The Alexandria Port Authority announced, Sunday, September 27, 2020 that the number of ships in the port’s waiting area has reached the number (zero), for the first time in the port’s history. Captain \ Tarik Shaheen, Chairman of the Alexandria Port Authority, said that the port had achieved a new and unprecedented accomplishment by reaching the number of waiting vessels on the external anchorage to Zero. Shaheen praised the role played by the specialists at the port, the cooperation shown by other concerned authorities, which was reflected in the speed of performance rates at the berths, noting that the use of automated systems and follow-up on the ground, and the automation of procedures contributed greatly to the speed of disbursement of cargoes and the achievement of higher loading and unloading rates. The authority had recently implemented plans that pushed to achieve stevedoring rates close to global, and issued several important decisions, including Resolution No. 632 of 2020 regarding the rates of loading and unloading of cargoes, which led to an increase in the rate of ship turnover at the port and access to zero waiting. Captain \ Tarik Shaheen announced that the port will start applying the (J I T) Just in Time system when it reaches the outer anchorage area, in a step that the port had sought for some time to advance the port. Shaheen added that the port seeks to record the highest rates, to reduce the length of stay of ships, and to reduce the number of procedures and costs to ensure progress in the indicators of global competitiveness in the field of ports. On the other hand, Captain \ Shaheen called on the port community to cooperate in implementing the (J I T) system. He also called for coordination with customs and resorting to pre-release of cargoes to increase the rates of ship turnover in the port and to continue applying this system. 27/09/2020
