Alexandria Port Authority Receives One of the Most Modern Environmentally Friendly Ships

At 3:00 AM on Thursday, April 24, 2025, the Alexandria Port Authority, headed by Rear Admiral / Ahmed Abdel Moaty Hawash, received the environmentally friendly container ship CMA CGM SALAMANQUE. The ship, which recently began operating in 2024, is powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), reducing environmental emissions in the maritime transport industry and keeping pace with global environmental standards and green initiatives. It is worth noting that the CMA CGM SALAMANQUE flying the Maltese flag and its registration number in IMO is 9961348 moored at the TahyaMisr Multipurpose Terminal at Alexandria Port. This multipurpose terminal is one of the newest and largest specialized terminals in Egypt and was inaugurated under the patronage of the President of the Republic in 2023. It has a handling capacity exceeding 1.5 million TEUs and 2 million tons. General cargo and 100,000 RoRo units. The Alexandria Port Authority's reception of this vessel which has a draft of 9.4 meters and a length of approximately 205 meters, and is powered by natural gas without polluting emissions is part of the Alexandria Port's vision to transform into a green port and maintain environmental sustainability in line with Egypt's national green initiatives. The Alexandria Port Authority has taken numerous steps towards transforming into a green port most notably controlling thermal and carbon emissions and implementing multiple initiatives such as the Off-Plant Power Supply (OPS) system the JIT system and advanced systems for disposing of solid and floating waste from ships. The Authority has also been keen to provide multiple skimming units and surface water launches among the port's fleet of marine units, the latest of which are two surface water launches contracted with the Egyptian Ship Repair and Construction Company to build them in the first quarter of 2019. 2024, and they are scheduled to be received in 2028 to join the port's fleet of naval units. This is in addition to rubber barriers to contain leaks advanced chemical and environmental laboratories, and other measures that support the state's vision of making Alexandria Port a green, environmentally friendly port.
