Alexandria Port Hosts High-Level African Delegation to Discuss Ways to Enhance Maritime Transport Cooperation

The Alexandria Port Authority, headed by Rear Admiral Ahmed Abdel Moaty Hawash, received a high-level African delegation on Monday, May 19, 2025, in coordination with the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT). The delegation included representatives from 18 African countries, including senior decision-makers in the maritime transport sector. The delegation included representatives from Zimbabwe, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Somalia, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Niger, Guinea, Mozambique, and Djibouti. During the meeting, the Alexandria Port Authority reviewed the port's advanced capabilities and the qualitative developments it is witnessing in terms of infrastructure and operational technologies. The meeting also addressed ways to deepen cooperation with our African partners in the fields of port development, logistics, capacity building, and enhancing inter-trade exchange. The two sides discussed mechanisms to support logistics operations, the integration of ports with multimodal transport systems, and opportunities to integrate modern and digital technologies into port activities. The importance of leveraging Alexandria Port's strategic location and capacity to become a regional maritime transport hub and a major trade corridor between African countries, Europe, and Asia was emphasized. This visit falls within the framework of the Egyptian state's strategic direction, and in accordance with the directives of Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, to expand economic and trade cooperation with African countries and provide all means of support and sustainable partnership. The visit included a field tour of the port, where the delegation viewed the docks, yards, and marine passenger terminal, in addition to monitoring the progress of operational processes related to maritime navigation, pilotage, and towing. The delegation also inspected the navigation lock that connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Nile River, which is part of the Authority's plan to expand the use of various means of transportation—land, rail, and river—to transport goods to and from the port more efficiently.
