The preliminary meeting to launch the MED PLUS project was held at the Alexandria Port Authority on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. Admiral Sherif Zakaria, Vice President of the Maritime Transport Sector, Admiral Tarek Abdullah, and Admiral Hisham Safwat, Vice Chairman of the Alexandria Port Authority, chaired the meeting on behalf of the heads of the sector and the port. The meeting was held at the Alexandria Port Authority on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, on behalf of the heads of the sector and the port. The meeting was widely attended by relevant national authorities, including the Alexandria Port Authority, the Maritime Transport Sector, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Regional Office, the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, a representative of shipping agencies, a representative of marine works contractors, and Marassi Marina Port, along with other relevant national authorities. The project's regional advisor also participated via video conference, as part of strengthening international cooperation to support the environmental management of Egyptian ports. Alexandria Port's participation in this project comes in cooperation with Marassi Marina Port and with the support of the Ministry of Transport. The MED PLUS project is an ambitious regional initiative overseen by the United Nations. It aims to modernize marine waste management policies in the Mediterranean Basin, contributing to enhancing environmental sustainability. The project's national advisor was selected from the Environmental Protection Department at Alexandria Port, confirming the port's leading role in developing the environmental management system and enhancing cooperation with international partners for more sustainable and integrated ports. From this perspective, the Alexandria Port Authority affirmed its full commitment to the Egyptian state's vision of transforming into smart and green ports, in accordance with the directives of Lieutenant General Kamel El-Wazir, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Transport, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and Egypt Vision 2030. This represents a vital and important step towards international cooperation in the environmental field in accordance with the highest international standards.
